Yearly website maintenance cost – what to pay for?
Attention! The prices presented below apply to website renewal after one year, companies usually offer really huge discounts for the first year of maintaining a website.
Two most important components that make it up to the yearly cost are:
- Hosting – also known as server, or web space, here your website and its files are located.
- Domain – your website address (the one you enter in your browser), which simplifies finding it by your customers e.g. “deepwaterdigital.eu”.
Hosting (server)
This is the cost, which depends on various factors. However, in the case for smaller and simpler websites cost will range from approximately 150 PLN to 600 PLN net per year. On the other hand for a decent E-commerce hosting, you will pay from 400 PLN net upwards – depending on the quantity of products, the website structure, and the average number of active users at the same time.
Domain (web address)
A Domain cost is usually cheaper than hosting, most affordable options start at around 100 PLN net per year for a .pl domain, while the upper limit is around 300 PLN net.
Here cost depends mostly on domain that we own, commonly, our Polish “.pl” domain is the cheapest. Domains like “.eu”, “.com” or from other countries are generally slightly more expensive.
Optional extra costs
Apart from the domain and hosting, we may encounter other website maintenance costs, although they are not strictly necessary for our website to function, rather they expand its capabilities. These expenses include:
- SSL Certificate – website security through the encryption of transmitted data. We can always go for free Let’s Encrypt certificate, this way we minimise costs without compromising on security;
- CDN (Content Delivery Network) – it reduces website load time by rendering content from the closest geographical server to the user.;
Although not directly connected with website maintenance, it is worth considering purchasing an email package to have secure email address with your own domain. This type of service is provided by companies like Microsoft, Google or Proton. Moreover in rare cases you may have to pay subscription for software used by the site e.g. newsletter management, custom CMS, or others.
